INNOCENT AUGUSTINE – UWEZO PROGRAM ALUMNI 2018-2021
My name is Innocent Augustine Kalimba, a 19-year-old Tanzanian currently in my final year at The African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa. My journey with the UWEZO PROGRAM, initiated by the Great Hope Foundation, began in 2018 during my ordinary-level studies at Kibaha Secondary School and continued until my graduation in 2021.
Participating in the UWEZO AWARD was transformative for me. It offered a platform to explore my potential beyond traditional academics. Through various initiatives — sanitary pad campaigns, tree planting, blood drives, and community clean-ups — I was empowered to lead and make a tangible difference in my community. These projects not only fostered a spirit of service but also honed my soft skills, including leadership, public speaking, event planning, and time management, all while maintaining strong academic performance.
Winning the 2020 UWEZO AWARD and mentoring the subsequent year’s winning team were significant milestones. The experiences I gained were instrumental in shaping my CV, aiding my acceptance into the African Leadership Academy, where I was one of only five Tanzanians in my year. I even had the honor of chairing the 11th annual session of the Model African Union, a premier youth-led simulation of the African Union.
Perhaps the most valuable lesson from UWEZO PROGRAM is the importance of community connection. The change we seek starts with individuals who care enough to take action, regardless of their circumstances. Inspired by the selflessness of others, I now strive to leave a meaningful impact in my community.
As I reflect on my journey, I encourage fellow students to ask themselves: How will you make a difference in your community? The potential for change lies within each of us, waiting to be unleashed.”
